Mix it up with Blender

One of the coolest pieces of software I have found is Blender …. it is a 3d modeling app…Like 3dstudio MAX or Maya …but unlike those IT IS FREE

that’s right…you too can create beautiful 3d models for only No payments of 0 dollars

ok so here is the deal…blender has a lot of features ..and I mean A LOT

It is really awesome just to mess around with..you could literally spend days upon days and never use every features….

Not only is freeware…it is open source  which means its not only free (as in lunch) it is also free (as in freedom) …I dunno about you…but free is my favorite number

RK launcher –Taskbar with style

Are you tired of windows (xp’s) drab taskbar…wow we get 3!!! whole colors …thats … boring .. you have seen mac os and its shiny dock right ?

 and though … man it would be cool if  Icould have that on windows…well you can

 There have been others like it…like objectdock and Yz’s dock…but this is the most streamlined and simple…objectdock has adds and bugs you when you have the free version

It also supports small addons called “docklets” they can be anything from a clock to an email checker…this is a cool app and as all others on this site

nPOP –Streamlined email

I found this great little (100k) email client called npop

 

its really great especially if you normally use a clunky program like outlook it only supports pop but most mail is pop anyway …in its regular form its 100k  but if you wanted SSL encryption (ala gmail) You just download 3 DLL’s and that bumps it up to 500k ….its really easy to configure … I had it going with my gmail in about 5 seconds

This is a really nice email client especially for small things …like mailto: links   … best of all its FREEEEEEEE

I give nPOP a 9/10 if it supported imap It would have probably got a 10 …but still pretty darn good

Some cool apps

One day I was chatting in irc On irc.hak5.org to a friend of mine Tom Bell    , we were talking about how windows xp has transparency built in…and  sobody said it would be cool if you could make use of it on ANY app and not just the ones that its available on ….Tom Bell is the lead developer of Nubuntu …a coder

He replied “I can do that” and he came back 20 minutes later with this:

The same day I was tring to drag things from one window into another and they kept loosing focus and covering each other…so I asked him to make an app that make a program stay on top of others…20 minutes …came this:

Finaly…I was tired of having to minimize all the apps on my screen to look at the clock…and all the clock apps I looed at were bloated and had a bunch of things I didnt need…so tom being a crazy coder as he is rose to the challenge once again and created this:

(zoomed for better visibility…actual size is about the size of the taskbar clock)

…from now on …I will be submitting my apps in this form …

Mozy –free reliable backups

A while back (6 months) I discovered a service called mozy …it was in its infancy with only one gig and kind of slow….not very streamlined… but NOW mozy is in beta and has up to 2.3 gigs for FREE it automatically backs up incrementally after the first Big backup where you upload a bunch of stuff at once…2.3 gigs may not SEEM big…but when all you have is webserver backups/docs/pictures 2 gigs goes a long way…anyway…here are the screenshots

The installer is pretty routine , until the 3rd screen where it asks for your mozy account and password … after that it asks you to select all the folders you want to backup

They have pretty fast servers…but the average (upload) speed for broadband isn’t all that fast …so to backup the entire 2.3 gigs of your quota (for free) will take about a day

The nice feature of mozy is that once it does the initial backup … it monitors the folders you selected for new files …then ONLY when your computer is idle it uploads them to keep them up to date on mozy’s servers

This is a pretty cool app especially for free

here are some really cool games I found…they are very very small

Both the games and the size(average of about (65k)

although very simple they are fun to play during downtime

ther eare about 15 of these small games and they are open source so anyone can add to them
